Simply Enjoy Your Busy Life
This is an anecdote about Charles Lamb (1775-1834), an English essayist.
He got a job at the British East India Company in 1792 and worked there for 33 years.
In other words, most of his works were created during his time at this company.
However, due to his work, he could only write after getting off work.
"How wonderful it would be to have free time to do whatever I want?"
So, he always looked forward to retirement.
Finally, his working life at the company came to an end.
On his last day of work, Charles Lamb was excited.
He thought he would be endlessly happy with the idea that he would no longer be bound by time and could devote himself entirely to writing.
Many of his colleagues congratulated him.
"We sincerely congratulate you on your honorable retirement.
Now that you can write your works during the day instead of only at night,
Your works will surely shine even brighter."
In a good mood, Charles Lamb wittily replied.
"It's natural that writing under the sunlight would shine more than writing under the starlight."
However, three years later, a letter Charles Lamb
sent to his former colleague contained the following passage.
"Being idle is far more distressing than being busy.
When I laze around doing nothing every day, I feel like I'm unconsciously abusing myself.
I've finally realized that good ideas come to mind when one is busy with work.
Please keep this in mind and live a busy and fulfilling life."
Rest is sweet because it is an 'escape' rather than an 'everyday' thing.
If rest becomes a daily routine, it will no longer be sweet.
Instead, you will yearn for your busy days.
So, to create that thrilling escape in the future,
simply enjoy your busy life today.
